Lucknow: In a significant move to strengthen traditional healthcare systems, the Uttar Pradesh government under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has decided to introduce Sowa Rigpa and Siddha systems of medicine in AYUSH colleges across the state. The initiative aims to expand alternative treatment options while positioning Varanasi as a key centre for Sowa Rigpa.
Boost to Traditional Medicine
Officials said the inclusion of Sowa Rigpa—an ancient healing system with roots in Himalayan and Tibetan traditions—and Siddha medicine will strengthen the AYUSH framework, which already includes Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, and Homeopathy.
The move is expected to broaden healthcare access, particularly in treating chronic and complex conditions such as cancer, arthritis, mental health disorders, and lifestyle diseases, where complementary therapies can play a crucial role.
Courses and Practitioner Registration Planned
According to Principal Secretary (AYUSH) Ranjan Kumar, the process to roll out degree courses in these systems is underway. Curriculum design, infrastructure development, and regulatory standards are being finalised, following approval from the state government.
Once implemented, graduates from these courses will be formally registered, enabling them to practise and establish clinics. This is expected to significantly expand the reach of traditional healthcare services across both urban and rural areas.
Varanasi to Emerge as Research and Treatment Hub
The government plans to develop Varanasi as a leading hub for Sowa Rigpa, focusing on research, training, and उपचार (treatment). The city has been chosen due to its longstanding association with spiritual and traditional healing practices, making it a natural centre for such an initiative.
The proposed hub will not only facilitate advanced treatment but also promote scientific research to strengthen the evidence base of these ancient systems.

Employment and Research Opportunities
The introduction of these courses is also expected to generate new employment opportunities for young professionals. Trained practitioners will be able to open clinics and contribute to healthcare delivery, particularly in underserved regions.
Additionally, the initiative is likely to encourage academic research in traditional medicine, enhancing its credibility and global acceptance.
About Sowa Rigpa and Siddha Systems
Sowa Rigpa, believed to have originated in Tibet, is a holistic system that focuses on balancing the body, mind, and environment. It uses herbal formulations, minerals, and natural therapies to treat ailments such as digestive disorders, joint pain, skin conditions, and stress-related illnesses.
The Siddha system, widely practised in southern India, is based on maintaining equilibrium among the three bodily humours—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. It emphasises a combination of medication, diet, and lifestyle modifications for effective healing.
Towards Holistic Healthcare
With this initiative, Uttar Pradesh aims to integrate ancient wisdom with modern healthcare needs, offering patients a wider range of treatment options while preserving India’s rich medical heritage. The development of Varanasi as a Sowa Rigpa centre is expected to further enhance the state’s position as a hub for traditional and holistic medicine.
